Artificial Grass Infill Replacement

Artificial grass infill is a product placed between the fibers/blades of artificial grass. Infill is crucial for maintaining your lawn’s natural appearance and feel. When you step on your artificial grass lawn and notice how comfortable and soft it feels, that’s your infill at work.

Over time, your infill can shift, and its levels can decrease as the material is carried away by wind, birds, or rough weather. Maintaining your infill is crucial to keep your lawn looking its best and performing at the highest level.

Core Roles of Artificial Grass Infill:

Artificial grass infill acts as a vital, stabilizing, and protective layer for synthetic turf.

Stability (Ballast): Infill provides crucial weight to the turf, preventing it from shifting, moving, wrinkling, or lifting over time.

Blade Support (Aesthetics): By filling the space between turf fibers, it forces the blades to stand upright, maintaining a lush, natural appearance and preventing them from matting or flattening.

Durability & Protection: It acts as a protective barrier, shielding the primary and secondary turf backing from UV rays and the friction caused by daily foot traffic, significantly extending the turf’s lifespan.

Shock Absorption & Comfort: Infill provides a cushioned, “springy” feel that makes the turf comfortable for walking, playing, and sports, reducing impact-related injuries.

Drainage Improvement: Ensures water flows efficiently through the turf, preventing pooling, standing water, and potential mold growth.

Temperature Control: Certain infills, such as lighter-colored sand or specialized materials, help reduce the surface temperature of the turf during hot weather.

Odor Control (Pet Applications): Specialized, antimicrobial, or zeolite-based infills are used to trap and neutralize odor-causing bacteria from pet waste.

Revitalize Your Artificial Grass Landscape

Infill is a heavy component layer that helps keep the turf weighted to limit the risk of wrinkling and lifting. Without proper infill depths and weight, artificial turf is prone to movement throughout the seasons.

There are dozens of infill offerings for artificial turf, and most fall under one of these three categories:

  • Rubber: Crumb Rubber, Coated Rubber
  • Sand: Coated Sand, Dyed sand, Silica Sand
  • Organic/Natural: Camofill, Zeolite, and Others

Artificial Grass Infill Replacement

Green-R Turf only uses organic and natural infill products for our installations and replacement service. We care about the environment and only use natural infill that meets safety requirements, enhances soil and water quality, reduces pollution, and promotes a self-sustaining cycle of resources. Our choice of infill is eco-friendly, water-efficient, odor-neutralizing, and, most importantly, safe for children and pets.

When Will I Need to Replace the Infill?

Infill generally needs to be replenished every 5 to 7 years, though routine inspections and minor top-ups are often required much sooner, depending on foot traffic and pet use.

While the material itself (like silica sand) can last as long as the turf, it naturally shifts, compacts, or washes away over time, requiring periodic maintenance to keep the grass blades standing upright.

Recommended Maintenance Schedule

The frequency of adding or refreshing your infill depends largely on how the lawn is used:

Light Use (Decorative): Top-up every 18 to 24 months.

Moderate Use (Family Garden): Top-up every 12 to 18 months.

Heavy Use (Pets/Kids): Top-up every 6 to 12 months to maintain cushioning and hygiene.

Major Replenishment: A more significant refresh of the infill layer is typically recommended every 5 to 7 years.

Visual Signs You Need New Infill

Instead of following a strict calendar, you can “let the grass blades tell you” when it is time for a refresh. Common indicators include:

Flattened Blades: If the fibers look limp or droopy and do not “bounce back” after brushing, the infill level is likely too low to provide support.

Uneven Surface: Noticing dips or areas that feel harder underfoot suggests infill has migrated or compacted.

Poor Drainage: If water begins to pool on the surface, the infill may be overly compacted, blocking the flow to the drainage system.

Persistent Odors: In pet areas, if rinsing and enzyme cleaners no longer remove smells, the infill may be contaminated and require professional replacement.

Factors Affecting Longevity

Several environmental and usage factors can shorten the time between infill replacements:

Infill Migration: Heavy rain, snowmelt, or installing turf on a slope can cause granules to wash away or bunch together.

Compaction: High foot traffic in specific zones (like walkways or play areas) compresses the material, reducing its cushioning effect.

Material Choice: Organic or cooling infills (like cork or coconut-based) may break down faster than mineral-based options like silica sand, requiring more frequent maintenance.

Infill Recommendations by Application

Recommended artificial grass infills are selected based on application: silica sand is best for low-traffic lawns; coated sand for high-traffic, sports, play, or pet areas; organic infill; and antibacterial infill for odor control. Generally, 1-3 lbs per sq. ft. is required.

Proper infill ensures stability, drainage, and longevity.

Residential Lawns (Low Traffic): Silica Sand (budget-friendly, basic stability).

High-Traffic Areas/ Pet Turf/Dog Runs/ Sports Fields/Athletic Areas/Playgrounds: Organic, Antibacterial infill for durability, antimicrobial properties, and reduced compaction.

Putting Greens: Specialized, fine silica sand for better ball roll.

Key Considerations

Amount: 1–2 lbs per sq. ft. is common, but up to 3 lbs may be needed for higher, denser piles.

Maintenance: Infill may need to be topped off over time to keep blades upright.

Installation: Use kiln-dried silica sand for the best performance to prevent clumping
